I was heartbroken when my EP-3 Maestro Echoplex (bought for 99 bucks in 1989 at the Starving Musician in San Jose, R.I.P.)
had its ceramic board broken. Replacements at this point are very expensive and have maintenance issues that I don't
want to handle.

So . . . a pedalboard that functions like an EP-3. Lots of choices for the echo sound -- you know them -- but very few
for the feature I valued most. Jimmy Page can keep his pre-amp (but yea, I like it too), I want the SOS, Sound on Sound!

Yea, yea, the El Capistan. I have V1 and like it but not the mono -> stereo bit. Paired with the MXR Mini-Booster it does
sound close to the original EP-3, I'll admit.

But the Volante won out. For the moment. There's the ECCOS to try! What are your suggestions / boards that do the same?

I miss the way the sound loops slowly faded out . . . digital is much too clean. Haven't found the right setting in the Volante
yet to capture that part.

In the process I used AI for setting suggestions. "We" also came up with an interesting experiment
using the Roland JC-40 FX loop to divert the modulation Loop 2 of the Swiss Things through.

Dare I try it? I fear awful oscillation (which might be cool, who knows. . . .)

Guitar Rig Strategy & Signal Chain Blueprint

A summary of the recent configuration notes for the Xotic EP Booster, Wampler Mini Ego, Chase Bliss CLEAN, Strymon Volante, and Roland JC-40 setup.

1. Xotic EP Booster Internal DIP Switches

To capture the vintage Echoplex Maestro EP-3 preamp tone:
* Switch 1 (+3dB Boost): OFF (Down) - Keeps baseline at unity gain to match original EP-3 behavior.
* Switch 2 (Bright Switch): OFF (Down) - Tames clinical highs and accentuates natural warmth/low-mid fatness.
* External Gain Knob: Set fully counter-clockwise (at zero) to act strictly as a tone-sweetening preamp wrapper.

2. Front-End Chain (Before EQD Swiss Things)

Designed to shape guitar dynamics and prime the signal before entering the main loop controller:
1. Guitar ➔ Wampler Mini Ego Compressor
* Settings: Volume at Unity (~10-11 o'clock), Sustain at 12 o'clock, Blend at 11 o'clock (parallel compression preserves pick attack), Attack & Tone toggles UP (Bright/Fast) to maintain articulation before entering the warm preamps.
2. Xotic EP Booster (Always-on, Vintage Setting)
3. Chase Bliss Condor mkII (Gain/EQ)
* Settings: Kept clean for now. Use Bass at ~11 o'clock if the low-mids get too boomy, give a gentle push around 800Hz–1kHz for mid-forward tape playback character, and use LPF if modulation gets piercing.
4. EQD Swiss Things INPUT

3. EarthQuaker Devices Swiss Things Loops

  • Loop 1 (Unbuffered / Dirt): Wampler Tumnus ➔ Chase Bliss Wombtone ➔ EQD The Depths
  • Loop 2 (Buffered / Ambient): Chase Bliss Mood mkII ➔ Chase Bliss Onward

4. The FX Loop "Dual Echoplex" Mono-to-Stereo Routing

An experimental configuration mapping the Roland JC-40 FX Loop into a self-contained studio mastering line:
1. JC-40 FX Loop SEND (Mono) ➔ Long guitar cable running up to the Xotic EP Booster (on top of the amp).
2. Xotic EP Booster Output ➔ Short patch cable to MXR Booster Mini (on top of the amp).
* MXR Internal Trimpot: Dialed back to 25%–30% (9 o'clock) to blend subtle Echoplex saturation without heavy distortion. External Volume at unity (~8-9 o'clock).
3. MXR Booster Mini Output ➔ Long guitar cable dropping back down to the Chase Bliss CLEAN Compressor Mono Input (on the floor board).
4. Chase Bliss CLEAN Stereo Output ➔ Short TRS-to-dual-TS Y-cable (Stereo Insert Cable).
* Setting: Flip MISO (Mono In, Stereo Out) dip switch ON.
5. Strymon Volante Stereo Inputs (L/R) (Sound on Sound Mode)
* Setting: Wear and Mechanics knobs at ~1 o'clock to introduce authentic tape degradation into the SOS layers.
6. Source Audio Ventris Stereo Inputs (L/R) (Or interchangeable stereo reverb like the EQD Avalanche Run)
7. JC-40 FX Loop RETURNS (L and R)

5. Amp Settings & Emergency Taming Checklist

  • JC-40 Switches: Set FX loop to SERIES. Turn the amp's front-panel Bright switch OFF.
  • If it howls or oscillates:
    1. Pull the external volume of the MXR Booster Mini back to 8 o'clock.
    2. Flip the JC-40 loop level switch from -10dBm to +4dBm for more headroom.
    3. Lower the input gain/ratio on the Chase Bliss CLEAN to let the dual compressors breathe.
