Analog Distortion & Tone Shaping channel strip
STAGGER, is a 500 series format, Harmonic distortion channel strip module, designed around a mixer fader amplifier.
Like in any console channel, it features FX sends with level controls. Inserted in the signal path of these FX Sends, are two distortion circuits, one for each FX send.
The first distortion circuit is based on a Classic preamp with limiter called "Level Loc" made in the late sixties, by Shure. It features a Pad with 20/40 db attenuation selector for Line level signals, a "Distance" switch, that acts as a Threshold control, and a Release control, with 3 positions: Fast, Mid and slow. This Limiter was famous by the "air" it gave to overheads, drums, guitars...
The second distortion circuit is based on a symetric Soft Clipping circuit. This is not the typical clipping diode circuit you can see around the net. No. It is a different topology. This circuit gives complete cancellation and the top of the signal will be flat.
Besides, the fader amplifier itself features a BOOST gain control for more or less distortion, at your hand. One interesing feature, is that, as the main fader is placed AFTER the BOOST, it controls the level of signal sent to the DAW, be it distorted or not, to avoid clipping your converters!!.
The unit also includes in the front panel an Instrument input, that you can select with a switch. This switch changes the input from the rear line level input, to the front panel instrument level input. You can control de gain of the instrument with the BOOST control.!! All these features make the STAGGER distortion Channel strip a real Swiss knife, for tonal control.
