Positronic Transient Gate Steady State Fate Eurorack

The PTG is a dual, Vactrol cored, Envelope Generator, Universal "Pass" Gate, Envelope Follower, VCA and Voltage Processor.

The PTG is very similar to a Low Pass Gate except that the actual vactrol induced envelope is available at the output.
This is different from a traditional LPG, where the vactrol envelope is processed internally by means of controlling a VCF and or VCA.
This makes the PTG a "Universal Pass Gate" in that the envelope is available at the outputs to modulate any VCF, VCF or any parameter you like.

The PTG will accept any positive signal at the top main inputs. The gain multiplier control can pass the signal at unity or vary from multiplication by 1/2 to 2.
A 5V positive signal is nominal here.

While the shape of any input voltage will impart itself onto the vactrol and produce an envelope, we will consider the gate signal or "step" as a base.

The PTG has a unique parameter called "Step Response" This parameter is voltage controllable by the control knob that doubles as a CV attenuator when a CV is applied. The switch selects between bipolar and unipolar CV (either can be used for different effects).
Step Response simutaneously varies the shape and amplitude of the vactrol envelope; changing how the vactrol "responds" to a gate or step or any voltage shape. this is very similar to a dynamic attack/amplitude control. Low settings are slow to start and very muted, higher settings are instant and very snappy like a drum.

Next down the line is a classic damping control. The Damp CV controls work just like the Step Response. damping however controls the vactrol Ringing. with a short trigger pulse at the input, damping can produce ringing of up to 1 minute or more depending on the input voltage shape. At the max damping setting, it is possible to overdamp the vactrol to very short and muted. Next we see a Post Gain Output.
Post gain is tapped directly off the multipier stage of the input. This can be used to buffer, attenuate/amplify signals alone or in conjunction with the PTG as an Envelope Follower/Processor etc.
There is a switch next to the main input to select between synth and line audio levels. This is useful for using audio from external sources. The amplified audio will impart itself onto the vactrols, creating the envelope while Step and Damping parameters are set. An audio following envelope is produced at the outputs and the amplified or attenuated audio is available at the Post Gain output to be processed through a filter or whatever you wish to modulate with the generated envelope! Finally there is the VCA input. Applying any signal here will process that signal through the vactrol envelope determined by the main input and panel controls and become available at the two outputs!

The two outputs provide a normal and inverted version of the envelope or VCA signal.

The PTG has TWO of these!

An interesting side note is that the PTG contains no physical capacitors in the audio or control paths. Only PS bypass caps are used. Otherwise, the only capacitance found in the circuitry are the intrinsic capacitance of the vactrols and the stray capacitances of the active circuitry (which really only comes into play at high frequencies)

Therefore, the enevelopes and shapes produced are purely vactrol, no capacitive additives or artificial flavors.
