It listens all the time and keeps only the moments that hurt: a scream, a clipped snare, a note falling away. Each one is a kernel in a bowl of sixteen lights. Feed it and it serves the oldest back, a crisp stutter or creamed into one sweet, sickly hold; what's eaten is gone, and as the bowl empties its hunger rises.
